Our guest photographer and judge was Richard Batch. Richard presented images from his 30+ years of photography, most of which happened in and around DC.

Richard talked about the importance of patience in photography and what Henri Cartier-Bresson called “The Decisive Moment”. Apparently, back in the day, if you wondered the streets of DC long enough and were quick on your feet, you could end up with a shot of Jacqueline Kennedy on your Leica or Hasselblad!

To summarize Richard’s presentation, in order for us to capture something special, we need to have:

Intuition to recognize the potential for a great moment in our surroundings,

Patience to see that moment finally unfold in front of our eyes,

Courage to get close to our subjects, and

Speed to capture that special moment before it is gone forever.

Happy shooting!
