SUMMARY:November 2021 - Monthly Meeting + Virtual Competition
DESCRIPTION:On Wednesday\, November 17\, 18:15 PM\, IPS is honored to host Sean Harris for a presentation of his accomplishments and body of work\, followed by our monthly virtual photo competition (Theme: Storytelling). The competition follows our EIC guidelines – please refer to http://www.imfwb-ips.org/eic-guidelines/ if you would like additional details. \nWe are pleased and honored to host Sean Harris as the guest presenter and judge during our November Virtual Meeting. The meeting theme is “Storytelling”: Everybody loves a well-told story. They can make us excited\, laugh\, cry or feel empathy for someone else. Send us your images  – 2 entries by member – that summarize a story and/or sequence of events. Each image could contain a montage/collage of 2/3 images that ‘summarize a story or sequence of events\, and each of the two submissions from each photographer will still be assessed individually for the competition. \nHere are Sean’s remarks about the event and images: “I have emphasized “could contain a montage/collage” because some participants will simply submit as they are used to submitting. It is imperative that the judging be done as always\, in my opinion\, and that is to respect the integrity of a single photograph. In their remarks about their images\, the winning photographers would then have a short opportunity to describe the relationship between the photos they’ve submitted\, and the “story” or “event” those images portray. It just creates a stronger or deeper mode of considering the photos to select for each participant. In this case\, the photographer is acting as an editor of a story\, as well as an editor of a single image.” Send us your best shots for the competition by Saturday\, November 13\, midnight! \nSean Harris is a creative and commercial photographer based in Bethesda\, and he makes movies\, musicals\, books and theatrical performances as well as his photography work. He is the co-proprietor of Wonder 101 LLC\, which has provided images of Congress (of Lin Manuel Miranda\, Bread for the World\, Save the Children)\, the U.S. Supreme Court\, Qatar Airways\, Hilton Hotels\, Douglas Development\, Donnelly Modern Design\, and too many organizations and companies to count. \nHis creative projects can be seen at http://www.seanieblue.com/ and his commercial work at http://www.wonder101.com. \n

SUMMARY:April 2021 - Monthly Meeting + Virtual Competition
DESCRIPTION:On Wednesday\, April 28\, 18:15 PM\, IPS is honored to host Blake Stenning for a presentation of his accomplishments and body of work\, followed by our monthly virtual photo competition (Theme: Open). The competition follows our EIC guidelines – please refer to http://www.imfwb-ips.org/eic-guidelines/ if you would like additional details. \n \nBlake Stenning is a fine art photographer whose visual aesthetic has been shaped by the pursuit of thematic ideas that combine formal explorations of composition\, light\, and form\, with meditative observations of everyday environments. Some of his work has concentrated on specific subjects such as chronicling the itinerant life of rural county fairs\, or exploring the sublime within the transcendent spaces of gothic cathedrals. At other times he simply allows intuition and chance to guide him\, resulting in dissecting scenes with his immediate field of view to inspire unusual juxtapositions composed within the camera frame. Blake’s work has been exhibited in numerous solo and group shows. In 2014\, he was awarded a Strauss Fellowship by the Arts Council of Fairfax County. He has also been a juried member of the Torpedo Factory Artists Association\, past member of Multiple Exposures Gallery\, and served as a board member and instructor at Photoworks in Glen Echo Park. \nBelow we are including selected images from Blake’s portfolio: \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n

SUMMARY:Monthly Meeting – March 2020
DESCRIPTION:Monthly Meeting – March 2020 \nEIC Theme: A Moment in Time \nOne thing that makes photography unique is its ability to freeze a moment in time. As humans\, we see what’s in front of us as a continuing chain of events. The camera\, however\, can stop time from moving forward\, giving us the opportunity to study that fraction of a second. And it’s being able to control those fractions of a second that makes this possible. \nJudge: TBC

SUMMARY:Monthly Meeting – November 2019
DESCRIPTION:Monthly Meeting – November 2019 \nEIC Theme: Dominant Colors\n \nIdeally\, a photograph should have one dominant color. Additional colors should appear subordinate to and supportive of the main color. Remember that different colors evoke different emotions. Some are positive\, some are negative\, depending on the viewer’s perspective. If you want to send a clear message in your image\, you should strongly consider a dominant color. \nJudge: TBC

A self-taught photographer\, Katie has invested in several challenging mentorships in both family and documentary photography (in fact\, she photographs most of her family work as “Day in the Life”\, documentary-style sessions)\, most recently completing the prestigious Missouri Photo Workshop hosted by the University of Missouri School of Photojournalism. Being raised in a sheltered religious home\, Katie has found photography to be her own means of exploring aspects of the world she didn’t get to know growing up\, finding her way to a better understanding of humanity\, community and connection. \nKatie is a 13-year resident of the District of Columbia\, a recovering improviser\, an avid reader of moody British police procedurals\, and drinker of much coffee. She and her husband and son love camping and playing pinball at Lyman’s on 14th Street. \nFor more: https://www.katiejettwallsphotography.com/aboutcv-page \n \nBlack Belt Project

But he also has been a photographer for as long as he has been a writer and now\, with the publication of his sixth book\, he offers a documentary-cum-memoir about two of the world’s great cities: New York and Paris. \nRecovered Memory: New York and Paris 1960-1980 is a meditation on time and place: before the internet and 24/7 news; when one could visit the Eiffel Tower without seeing police and automatic weapons\, when a ride on the New York subway cost 15 cents\, when the smell of fresh-baked baguettes wafted over nearly every Parisian neighborhood–when the Coney Island parachute ride still thrilled thousands. \nFrank will talk to the IPS members about the ‘Recovered Memory’ book\, the photographs included in it\, and the creation process behind it. \nNote: Copies of Frank’s beautiful and bestselling coffee table hardcover book will be available for purchase ($45\, tax included). Frank will be happy to inscribe the book for IPS members following his presentation. \n

He contributes to the international conversation on Syria with frequent appearances on National Public Radio\, BBC World Service\, Al Jazeera\, Voice of America\, Huffington Post\, Washington Post and the United Nations. \nFrom 2005-2010\, Hamacher was granted unprecedented access to the city of Aleppo\, Syria. He went to document ancient religious traditions and\, inadvertently\, captured the apex of Syria’s modernization before the eruption of civil war. Hamacher’s efforts contribute to the international conversation on Syria with frequent speaking engagements and television\, radio\, and print appearances. He has recently spoken at United Nations Geneva\, Great St. Mary’s Church Cambridge (UK)\,  Armenian Museum and Library of the United States and Dumbarton Oaks Research Library and Collection; and appeared on NPR\, BBC World Service\, Al Jazeera\, Voice of America\, and CBC’s Q. \nHamacher’s combination of photography\, sound\, and personal experience of Syria offers an unparalleled immersion into one of the world’s oldest civilizations. His adventurist spirit\, passion for people\, and love of culture earned him the trust of Syrians across all socio-economic classes. This allowed him to truly capture the essence of the Syrian landscape and its people.  His archive of sound and image was added into the permanent collection at the Library of Congress in early 2018. \nHamacher will speak about his latest exhibition\, 1\,001 Syrian Nights\, and his hopes to confront viewers with simultaneous visions of grandeur and resilience\, not just the destruction so commonly associated with Syria.

SUMMARY:Monthly Meeting - November 2018
DESCRIPTION:EIC Theme: Broken\nImages depicting subjects having been fractured or damaged and no longer in one piece or in working order. \nJudge: Sean Harris \nSean Harris has made his living with a camera for 20 years. But his camera work was always meant to be a supplement to his words. A writer who wanted to illustrate his stories\, Sean dove so deeply into image-making that he became a full-time freelance photographer and video producer. But the words are still his primary reason for shooting\, and he is still illustrating his own stories. Professionally\, Sean in the past year has shot Broadway hero Lin Manuel Miranda posing as Evita\, Supreme Court Justice Stephen Breyer drinking his favorite Bordeaux\, U.S. Senator Lisa Murkowski posing with a monster salmon\, while creatively filming his own ballet about a bird fighting the oil industry with musical instruments\, writing songs and composing music for a musical about Vincent van Gogh’s sister-in-law\, composing songs for a musical about the Grimm Brother Jakob’s life after his younger brother’s passing\, and writing a novel and theatre piece about Frankenstein author Mary Shelley. Twenty years as an accidental cameraperson has not erased his purpose as a writer\, and his talk at the IPS on November 14th is titled “Publish and Perish: Strategies for Remaining Relevant for Photographers in the 21st Century” and the brief talk will highlight the need for photographers to create stories for their photographs so those images can stand out in a society jammed with imagery. Sean’s most recent creative work can be seen in his imagining of fashion designer Alexander McQueen’s last days: “McQ\,” for which Sean wrote the music and lyrics\, and shot and edited the video at https://vimeo.com/284927859\, with the password “lee.”   \n \nEIC Guidelines: \nPlease upload up to three images max for the EIC competition to Dropbox\, in accordance with the IPS Competition Rules and EIC guidelines.
