SUMMARY:Monthly Meeting – February 2019
DESCRIPTION:Print Theme: Open \n\n\n\n\n\nPlease submit up to two images max for the Print competition by recording image names into a competition log to be provided by IPS at the meeting\, in accordance with IPS Competition Rules (including print size and matting guidelines). \nSubmission deadline: Day of the competition\, by 6:15pm (before the speaker’s presentation). \nAll Print images need to be clearly labeled with the photographer’s name\, image name\, and competition class (A or B). \nImages that do not adhere to the competition rules\, are submitted late\, and/or are not matted and labeled properly will be automatically disqualified. \nGuest Speaker/Judge: Frank Van Riper \nFrank Van Riper’s award winning career in journalism began in 1967 on the New York Daily News where for 20 years he served as White House correspondent\, national political correspondent and ultimately Washington Bureau news editor. But he also has been a photographer for as long as he has been a writer and now\, with the publication of his sixth book\, he offers a documentary-cum-memoir about two of the world’s great cities: New York and Paris. \nRecovered Memory: New York and Paris 1960-1980 is a meditation on time and place: before the internet and 24/7 news; when one could visit the Eiffel Tower without seeing police and automatic weapons\, when a ride on the New York subway cost 15 cents\, when the smell of fresh-baked baguettes wafted over nearly every Parisian neighborhood–when the Coney Island parachute ride still thrilled thousands. \nFrank will talk to the IPS members about the ‘Recovered Memory’ book\, the photographs included in it\, and the creation process behind it. \nNote: Copies of Frank’s beautiful and bestselling coffee table hardcover book will be available for purchase ($45\, tax included). Frank will be happy to inscribe the book for IPS members following his presentation. \n

SUMMARY:Monthly Meeting – December 2018
DESCRIPTION:Print Theme: Open \nPlease submit up to two images max for the Print competition by recording image names into a competition log to be provided by IPS at the meeting\, in accordance with IPS Competition Rules (including print size and matting guidelines). \n  \nGuest Speaker/Judge: Jason Hamacher \nJason Hamacher is the founder and director of Lost Origins Productions and the Lost Origins Gallery. He contributes to the international conversation on Syria with frequent appearances on National Public Radio\, BBC World Service\, Al Jazeera\, Voice of America\, Huffington Post\, Washington Post and the United Nations. \nFrom 2005-2010\, Hamacher was granted unprecedented access to the city of Aleppo\, Syria. He went to document ancient religious traditions and\, inadvertently\, captured the apex of Syria’s modernization before the eruption of civil war. Hamacher’s efforts contribute to the international conversation on Syria with frequent speaking engagements and television\, radio\, and print appearances. He has recently spoken at United Nations Geneva\, Great St. Mary’s Church Cambridge (UK)\,  Armenian Museum and Library of the United States and Dumbarton Oaks Research Library and Collection; and appeared on NPR\, BBC World Service\, Al Jazeera\, Voice of America\, and CBC’s Q. \nHamacher’s combination of photography\, sound\, and personal experience of Syria offers an unparalleled immersion into one of the world’s oldest civilizations. His adventurist spirit\, passion for people\, and love of culture earned him the trust of Syrians across all socio-economic classes. This allowed him to truly capture the essence of the Syrian landscape and its people.  His archive of sound and image was added into the permanent collection at the Library of Congress in early 2018. \nHamacher will speak about his latest exhibition\, 1\,001 Syrian Nights\, and his hopes to confront viewers with simultaneous visions of grandeur and resilience\, not just the destruction so commonly associated with Syria.

SUMMARY:Monthly Meeting - November 2018
DESCRIPTION:EIC Theme: Broken\nImages depicting subjects having been fractured or damaged and no longer in one piece or in working order. \nJudge: Sean Harris \nSean Harris has made his living with a camera for 20 years. But his camera work was always meant to be a supplement to his words. A writer who wanted to illustrate his stories\, Sean dove so deeply into image-making that he became a full-time freelance photographer and video producer. But the words are still his primary reason for shooting\, and he is still illustrating his own stories. Professionally\, Sean in the past year has shot Broadway hero Lin Manuel Miranda posing as Evita\, Supreme Court Justice Stephen Breyer drinking his favorite Bordeaux\, U.S. Senator Lisa Murkowski posing with a monster salmon\, while creatively filming his own ballet about a bird fighting the oil industry with musical instruments\, writing songs and composing music for a musical about Vincent van Gogh’s sister-in-law\, composing songs for a musical about the Grimm Brother Jakob’s life after his younger brother’s passing\, and writing a novel and theatre piece about Frankenstein author Mary Shelley. Twenty years as an accidental cameraperson has not erased his purpose as a writer\, and his talk at the IPS on November 14th is titled “Publish and Perish: Strategies for Remaining Relevant for Photographers in the 21st Century” and the brief talk will highlight the need for photographers to create stories for their photographs so those images can stand out in a society jammed with imagery. Sean’s most recent creative work can be seen in his imagining of fashion designer Alexander McQueen’s last days: “McQ\,” for which Sean wrote the music and lyrics\, and shot and edited the video at https://vimeo.com/284927859\, with the password “lee.”   \n \nEIC Guidelines: \nPlease upload up to three images max for the EIC competition to Dropbox\, in accordance with the IPS Competition Rules and EIC guidelines. Submission deadline: Saturday preceding the meeting date\, by 11:59pm (midnight). \nAll EIC images need to follow file naming conventions and include the photographer’s name\, image name\, and competition class (A or B). Images that do not adhere to the competition theme/rules\, submitted late\, and/or are not labeled properly will be automatically disqualified.
